Over the past week, some members of the CA Online Branch have been participating in an interesting program discussion about Facebook privacy issues. This is important because more and more AAUW members are connecting with each other and advocating for AAUW issues through social networking.
I've observed that when someone joins Facebook, and gets comfortable with how Facebook works, the genies at Facebook change the format, and hand-wringing ensues. It's not just a knee-jerk aversion to change (although that certainly factors in), but a legitimate concern that the changes mean a loss of control over our privacy.
It helps to know when a major change is on the horizon -- to be aware of what it is, how it will work, and the privacy implications. So Facebook users would be well-served to become familiar with the new Timeline feature currently in the early stages of being rolled out... preferably BEFORE it suddenly appears as your new Facebook profile.
Facebook's help menu offers a good introduction and tutorial, but we are pleased to share the introduction to Timeline presented at our branch's program discussion by Birgit Pauli-Haack, and encourage you to share it with all your Facebook friends.
Birgit's enthusiasm for the changes reminded me of how change in general often works in the world. We are more likely to welcome it if we are prepared for it and can see it's benefits, rather than have it thrust upon us with no notice and little explanation. Perhaps a metaphor for our relationship with AAUW as well as the organization evolves over time?
