The Southern California Educational Fund luncheon was very much enlivened by three American Fellows, three International Fellows, four Career Development Grant Recipients, and one Community Action Grant recipient. What a broad array of talent this represented. This was our opportunity to see and hear where our money has gone and what it’s done, and it was a most rewarding experience indeed. It was also rewarding to hear the gratitude these women expressed for our help. Many would not have been able to continue their education without it.
We heard about: minorities and justice (or lack of); mass pageants; preventing disease through public health; teaching women handicrafts for their independence; interpreting for the deaf in order to empower deaf women to speak up; and more; but last we heard about a project to teach writing to inner city girls by having real writers mentor them. Through this process, all the girls who participated not only graduated from high school, but also attended college. What a success story for this ongoing project !
