Tech Trek 2009-Stanford camp
AAUW California has two statewide programs: Tech Trek and Speech Trek. Both state programs were developed in response to AAUW-funded research, working towards equity for all women and girls.
The video above shows some of the highlights of just one of the seven Tech Trek camps held this summer across the state: Sonoma, Fresno, San Diego, Stanford (2), Santa Barbara and Whittier. If you search for "Tech Trek" on YouTube, you'll find other videos in addition to the one shared here. Staggered throughout the summer, the last 2009 Tech Trek camp ended August 8. So now we gear up for all the 2010 camps, which will include a new camp location to help meet the high demand for these camps.
Many AAUW branches across the state fundraise to sponsor campers to Tech Trek, but the costs keep going up. If you would like to make a tax deductible donation to help defray the costs of this spectacularly successful* project to help keep camper fees affordable, make a check payable to "AAUW CA SPF," write "Tech Trek" in the memo line, and mail it to the CA Online Branch Treasurer, Harriet Tower. (For non-AAUW members reading this who don't have access to Harriet's address, please send the Online Branch a message to request it.)
*What do I mean by "spectacularly successful?" Take a look at the description of Tech Trek on the AAUW CA website, and scroll down to the bottom of the page to the heading "More Information" to learn about the results of the surveys taken of girls who attended the first four years of Tech Trek camps, 1998-2001.
The Speech Trek program is newer than Tech Trek, and is funded entirely by donations. So if you would like to support this effort with a tax deductible donation, make your check payable to "AAUW CA SPF" and write "Speech Trek" on the memo line, and send it along with your Tech Trek donation to Harriet.
NOTE: Even though the Special Projects Fund of AAUW CA handles the finances for both programs, donations to Tech Trek and Speech Trek must be made with separate checks.

Sandy, congratulations on another successful year of Tech Trek. I would love to cross-post this blog on AAUW Dialog with your permission
By all means.... post to the AAUW Dialog about it! Tech Trek is one of those AAUW efforts that makes me proud of our organization. It involves hundreds of members all across the state, but special credit goes to Marie Wolbach, who created and coordinated Tech Trek for years, and the women who followed her to continue coordinating it, Nancy Andren and Carol Holzgrafe. Then there are the individual camp directors, dorm moms, field trip organizers, etc, plus all the branches that fundraise and advertise to find the girls who could most benefit from this experience. As I said.... it makes me proud to be an AAUW member!
